Stitcher's Retreat planned in Millersburg By The Journal Staff Randy Turner is planning two sessions of his Stitcher's Retreat in May in Ohio's Amish country at Millersburg. The retreats bring together stitchers with a few of their favorite cross-stitch designers for classes. Turner's wife, Cecilia, founder of Heart in Hand Needleart, has been a presenter in previous years. The sessions are for three days and two nights. Participants are limited to about 70. For more information or reservations, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to: A Stitcher's Retreat, 7215 Stonerun Place, Middletown, Ohio 45044. The article was written by a senior editor of Cross Stitch & Needlework, who attended the retreat incognito, not revealing she was writing an article until the conclusion of the retreat. This retreat was held at a lovely inn in Ohio's Amish country.
Have you ever wanted to get away from it all--go somewhere and do nothing but cross stitch? Maybe you need a stitching getaway. I visited one--A Stitcher's Retreat held at the Inn at Honey Run near Millersburg, Ohio--last year and found that to be exactly the function of a cross-stitch retreat.

If "stitching retreat" were listed
in the dictionary, the definition would be: A mini vacation for
cross-stitchers. That's what I found when I escaped to A
Stitcher's
Retreat...
A Stitcher's Retreat is the brainchild of Randy Turner. After his wife, Heart in Hand designer Cecilia, raved about the fun she had teaching at a Needlework Seminar, "I decided Ohio Amish country would be an appealing site for a retreat," says Randy. With Cecilia and their designer friends consulting, Randy organized the first retreat, held in the spring of 1998.
The article described the general schedule, including package classes, optional classes, a craft class, and door prizes.
A drawing for door prizes--beautiful fabrics, fibers, kits, and gift certificates--closed the retreat. Every participant had her name drawn at least once.
There were other special touches too. A string duet provided music during registration and a special piano concert filled the second evening. Many of the [kits available in the shop] are only available from the designers when they teach. [Class project kits] were designed exclusively for A Stitcher's Retreat.

Course You Can!
Cross Stitcher (U.K., April,
2003)
Course You Can!
Imagine it... hours of nothing but stitching; learning new things and making friends who love needlecraft as much as you do. It's not a dream--it can happen. Just go on a course.
Too many things get in the way of cross stitch: work, children, pets, cooking, cleaning, husbands... If you constantly find yourself thinking there aren't enough hours in the day, then it's time to make sure there are. What you need is a course; a chance to escape "normal" life and indulge yourself in a few hours, days or even weeks of pure, unadulterated stitching.
And not only that. You'll improve your stitching and learn something totally new, plus you can swap hints, tips and ideas with all the new friends you'll make.
We guarantee that once you've spent a bit of well-deserved time on yourself, there'll be no stopping you! Learn something new? Course you can.
The article interviewed a shop owner/designer who teaches classes in her shop, and a stitcher who had attended the shop owner's classes. The primary photograph featured was of Cecilia Turner of Heart in Hand Needleart at a retreat we had held in Kentucky.

The article also includes a section entitled:
Find that course
Looking for just the right course? We've tracked down three of the best, ranging from free in-store demonstrations to an American holiday of a lifetime!
The article offered three suggestions concerned the choices available to cross stitchers in the U.K. The first category was Bargain, which was a class at a U.K. cross stitch shop. The second was Treat, which was a getaway in the U.K. With the mention that British stitchers would have to spend airfare to the States, the final was Blow the Budget (which thankfully you don't have to do since you are already in the U.S.!), which was A Stitcher's Retreat!
A stitching and shopping weekend sounds great, but a stitching and shopping weekend in Ohio, USA sounds even better! You could go all the way to Ohio and really get away from it all!
Photos from retreats we had held in Vermont and Kentucky were included.

Finally, the A Stitcher's Retreat brochure was pictured in a section which provided tips for choosing classes, such as:
The most important thing is
to be totally honest about your skill level.
(For a discussion of the skill level necessary
to attend our retreats, click here.)
Be sure you know what's
included in the price. Teaching will be, but do you have to pay for
materials, refreshments or accommodation? (A
Stitcher's Retreat always includes all class fees, all materials,
breakfasts and dinners, lodging, and musical entertainment.)
Don't worry if you are
going on your own. Stitchers are a famously friendly lot to know and
once everyone starts talking about their past projects, it will feel
just like you've known each other for years.
